It's Almost White-Tailed Deer Season - Gun Version

I got ready today for my recently annual deer hunt by setting up my blind. As you will see in the following photos I climbed deep into the foothills of the Penokee Mountains.  I wanted to get away from too much western civ.

Blind on left, view down into ravine where I hope to shoot & kill Bambi's father.

The blind.

The blind again.

The blind from behind.  Yes we have snow on the ground.  It been an iffy proposition to predict snow for deer season.the last few years.

A Piliated Woodpecker flying away from me.  If I'd been a bit faster, & with a longer lens, I would have  had some pretty cool shots.

Here's an extremely cropped image of the woodpecker.  They are really cool birds.  & big.

OK, I lied.  Here is the truth in terms of the location of my blind.  I do, however, actually  live in the foothills of the Penokees, such as they are.

Cedar Waxwings

The last time a flock of these birds came around, they stripped the flowering crab of all the berries, thus depriving the ruffed grouse of a fine winter treat.  I hope these waxwings leave & soon. Here you go:

Finally Something I Built Apparently Works

I installed the new nest box unit yesterday. Looks pretty good, eh? I believe the chicken in this pic is a Seabright, but I'm not sure.

The chickens quickly figured how to use this new piece of furniture.

Of course, not all the chickens took the time to figure out the new arrangement(s) & used one old box & the reliable corner of the coop under the roost.

First Snow At Our Place, I Knew It Had To Happen At Some Time, But....

Down the town road.

The sauna, almost finished.

Down the town road again.

The flowering crab in the yard.

The Daily Doe, I think.  My game camera seems to be off its game, so I am going to make the assumption that this is a doe since I've only had two bucks trigger the camera back when it was on & in the game.

I've put this post on my other blog BillyCreek so could share the pain or beauty or excitement (the last two descriptors are for the snowboarders, X-country skiers, etc., who salivate at winter & silent sports.) I suppose the snowmobilers, not a silent winter sport, although I would love to own a snowmobile of the utility (long track) type so I could fish some inland lakes, are happy as well & hope for the best.
